My First Socks Help Along

Rye Sock by Tin Can Knits
Favorite Fingering Weight Yarn

It is time to learn how to knit your first pair of socks! Whether you are a sock newbie, need a refresher or just want the community, we welcome you to attend.

Join us every Wednesday, 7/31 - 9/4 from 5:30pm-7:30pm for the complimentary “My First Socks Help Along.”

Part class, part knit along & all fun, the Help Along is our version of a class where we will have plenty of knitting help, but with a relaxed structure so that you can knit at your own pace. We understand everyone has busy schedules, so the Help Along is structured with that in mind. Whether you start a few weeks in or have to miss a week- it is no problem. We will get you started from the beginning or picking up right where you left off.

In this class you will learn how to knit cuff down socks. The feature pattern is the Rye Sock by Tin Can Knits. It is available in a fingering, DK or worsted weight version, so choose the one you are most comfortable knitting. The sock is fun & comfy, featuring a garter front with a ribbed cuff & stockinette foot.

You may start at any session, but here is the agenda of what the instructor will be covering each week:

My First Socks Help Along

  • Week 1: What makes a good sock yarn & staff favorites. Discussion of gauge, needle selection. Staff-assisted shopping time for yarn & needles. How to cast-on!
  • Week 2: Help with cuff/leg as needed. Demonstration of heel flap & gusset construction. How to measure foot & adjust pattern for perfect fit.
  • Week 3: Review of heel flap/gusset. Demonstration of toe decreases.
  • Week 4 & 5: Demonstration of toe grafting with Kitchener Stitch. Hands-on assistance.
  • Week 6: Hands-on assistance & discussion of other sock construction methods for your next sock adventure.

You do not need to purchase materials ahead of time, as we will go through everything & have shopping time. However, here are the materials so you may bring what you already have:

  • 70-480 yards of fingering, DK or worsted weight yarn (depends on size being knit)
  • Yarn ideally is a sturdy wool with nylon for strength
  • Fingering version: Size US 1-2, double point needles (or preferred method of small circumference knitting)
  • DK version: Size US 2-3, double point needles (or preferred method of small circumference knitting)
  • Worsted version: Size US 3-5, double point needles (or preferred method of small circumference knitting)

We look forward to seeing you. There is no sign-up required...just show up ready to knit & have fun!

*Prerequisite: to make the Help Along more enjoyable, it is ideal to already have the following skills: casting-on, knitting, purling & simple decreases.
