You will need 5 buttons, approximately .75” (18 mm).

Gauge

26 stitches and 26 rows = 4 inches in Patterned stockinette stitch

Needle size

US 3 - 3.25 mm

US 5 - 3.75 mm

You will also need a size US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needle at least 48” (120 cm) long for finishing.
