Iris hat by Sari Nordlund

Craft: Knitting

This pattern is available on Ravelry.

The Iris hat is knitted with two strands of yarn and the brim is folded triple for extra warmth and coziness during the winter months. Combining a strand of silk-mohair knitted together with a fingering weight merino yarn makes the hat really soft and gives it a beautiful halo.

The Iris hat pattern includes instructions for working the hat without mohair and using two strands of fingering weight together or using just a single strand of DK weight yarn. If you wish to make the DK weight version, omit all instructions where it says “hold both yarns together” and work with a single strand instead.

You can easily adjust the size and length of the hat to get the fit you want. The hat is knitted from top down, so you can try it on as you knit it to make sure the head circumference and length are just perfect for your head. After the crown shaping the rest of the hat is just simple 1x1 ribbing.

The Iris hat is designed for everyday use, and it knits up surprisingly fast. This is the perfect project to use the precious hand dyed skeins from your stash, as the simple texture really highlights the colors and texture of the yarn! You can either go for a muted look by choosing one solid and one speckled yarn or for extra speckles by picking both yarns in speckled colorways (either the same colorway or both different).
