All beach walks beg for layers — wool socks tucked into boots, long scarves into oversized sweaters. Bradhan is that cozy pullover you’ve longed for on every blustery day. Perfectly boxy in shape, this fisherman-inspired workhorse shines with simple details like exposed seams, rolled hems and a touch of ribbing at the dropped shoulder. Woolen-spun Shelter keeps warm air trapped in the fabric of this unisex staple, making it the ideal choice for layering both over and under other pieces.

 

Construction

  • Garment is worked flat in pieces and seamed, with optionally exposed seams.
  • Neckband is picked up after assembly and worked circularly.
  • This garment’s construction allows for a mixing-and-matching of body and sleeve sizes to tailor fit; see schematic for dimensions.

  • Model wearing the Snowbound sample is 5’9½”/176.5 cm tall with a chest circumference of 33”/84 cm and is wearing Size 3 with 11½”/29 cm positive ease.
  • Model wearing the Long Johns sample is 5’11”/180.5 cm tall with a chest circumference of 40”/101.5 cm and is wearing Size 4 with 9¾“/25 cm positive ease.

Yarn

Brooklyn Tweed Shelter — 100% American Targhee-Columbia Wool (140 yards/128 meters per 50 grams)

  • 9 (10, 11, 12) (12, 13, 14) (15, 16, 16, 18) skeins
  • The skein count for size 10 is near or exact to the listed yardage; consider adding an extra skein.
  • Photographed in colors Long Johns (with exposed seams) and Snowbound (without exposed seams)

Gauge

  • 18 stitches & 28 rows = 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch with Size A needle(s), after blocking

Needles

Size A (for Main Fabric and Neckband)

  • One pair of straight needles or a 24–32”/60-80 cm circular needle and a 16”/40 cm circular needle in size needed to obtain gauge listed
  • Suggested Size: 4.5 mm (US 7)

Size B (for Neckband)

  • One 16”/40 cm circular needle, one size smaller than Size A
  • Suggested Size: 4 mm (US 6)

Size C (for Neckband; optional)

  • One 16”/40 cm circular needle, two sizes smaller than Size B
  • Suggested Size: 3.5 mm (US 4)
